Ghosting The Toast & Other Speeches: Hiring Writers for Speaking at Weddings

In an age where sincere words can come across as saccharine just because everyone has heard them a million times in film and any speech at an event can be recorded at placed on the internet, there’s no two ways about: public speaking is much more stressful than it once was.

Writing speeches for toasts and other wedding moments is difficult enough, but at least if you stuttered or made a flat joke the moment would be over. Now these mishaps can be posted online –so, you know –any number of complete strangers can watch it too.

So is it any real surprise that people are now delegated these words to ghostwriters?

That’s right. Ghostwriting for speeches is on the rise. Companies like NY-based Oratory Laboratory offer their word-smithing for toasts, officiating and even personalized vows. The conceit behind it being that much like buying a Hallmark™ card for someone, the spirit behind the words is still the same, you’re just hiring someone to express those feeling in a concise and elegant fashion. Often, the process involves a meeting so the writer can get a sense of what you’re looking to say and you’re individual cadence.

But is it right?

We’re not in a position to tell that to you. Some people truly aren’t comfortable speaking in public, and all of the added social pressures of the 21st century sure do not make those fears easier to manage. We do recommend trying to put it into your own words before you subcontract it out, but you also shouldn’t feel like you’re cheating or getting away with something if you decide to go down that road.
