Some Tips on Wedding Cake Etiquette

In the whirlwind haze of looking for a dress or deciding what accessories the bridesmaids will wear, it’s easy to forget the small things. In this case, what to do with the wedding cake.

“Eat it,” we can already hear people quip from the rafters.

Yes, yes, there’s that.

But you’d be surprised how often the bride and groom nervously trip over one another as they’re trying to cut the cake. Okay, we’ll admit, it’s cute. And even though we strive to be a top NJ wedding venue, if you’re set on grabbing a handful of baked goods and smashing it into the groom’s face, we recommend aiming the cake icing-first for maximum hilarity and tastiness.

Still, if you’re at least mildly curious on knowing wedding cake traditions, read on.

  1. Cutting The Cake

In usual tradition, the bride holds the cake-cutting knife while the groom places his hand on hers as a gesture of guidance and support. They make two gentle cuts into the bottom layer of the cake and then slowly place the slice onto a plate. The groom feeds the bride a little bit of the cake, and then she feeds some to him.

  1. Who Gets The Cake?

If there are any left overs, typical etiquette stresses that the remains of the bottom tiers are handed out to guests as an additional ‘thank you’ for attending the reception. There’s no hierarchy to this. The guests are free to divide it up based on whoever wants it.

The top tier however, belongs to the wedding couple. Usually the caterer (or the wedding party) will package it in its own distinct box and deliver it to the couples’ home. Once delivered, the best way to preserve the cake is to freeze it for one hour, take it out and wrap it in several layers of plastic wrap with a final layer of tinfoil. Place the cake on a piece of Tupperware or plastic ice cream pale and place it at the bottom of the freezer.

When it’s time to celebrate your one-year anniversary, unwrap the cake and let it thaw in the refrigerator. You’ll have a delicious reminder of your incredible wedding day to mark the first year of the rest of your lives.
